It did look like Max was at least as fast as the McLarens in race pace today. 1. At the start after Max passed Piastri, Max pulled out of DRS range quickly. Piastri never mounted a challenge in the first stint. 2. There is no evidence of the McLaren having a tire deg advantage. 3. After Piastri pitted, Norris was something like 9.8 seconds behind Max. Norris never made much of a dent into that, maybe by 0.5 seconds, but that could be just Max managing. 4. In the final stint, after Norris cleared Piastri, Norris never got any closer. Although you could argue that at that point, Norris knew that he wasn't going to catch Max, so no point in pushing hard.18-05-2025 17:41

As Jacques Villeneuve pointed out in the post race show: it was inevitable that Norris would pass Piastri with that much of a tire advantage. So why wouldn't the McLaren pitwall (=Zak) just order Piastri to let Norris pass? Not giving the order just delayed the inevitable by a few laps, used up more of Norris' tires, and lets Max disappear up the road.18-05-2025 17:25

Within reason, that was the best result for Max. 1. Max won 2. Piastri who is leading the WDC finished behind Norris18-05-2025 17:00

Ferrari's race pace looked ok, although a bit difficult to judge since they started so far back. The Mercs were just slow. The AMs didn't look any faster. Conclusion: they qualified well because they used the mediums.18-05-2025 16:58

Piastri looked hesitant there, at T1. Maybe Piastri was thinking that his real competitor is Norris, so he didn't want to tangle with Max. Going into the race, the expectation was also that the McLaren was significantly faster than the RB, so maybe Piastri thought he would pass Max later on anyway.18-05-2025 16:55

I am not aware of Piastri having cooked his tires in the first stint. From what I remember, he was keeping up ok with Max, stayed a few seconds back, but probably just to avoid the dirty air.18-05-2025 16:50

It will be very interested to see the positions where the cars of Ocon and Antonelli came to a stop.18-05-2025 16:47

But between a great driver and an average driver, it should only be two or three tenths difference. It shouldn't be close to a second," Coulthard said. Hey, that's the difference between Leclerc and Lewis!05-05-2025 06:04
